The shoemaking industry was first established in Kilmarnock during the 18th century A.L. Clark’s shoemaking company was founded here in 1820, when shoes were still made by hand. A steam-powered factory was set up in 1873, and in 1908 the company combined with Abbot’s to form SAXONE SHOES, a name which became world-famous.
